We left Rotorua early in the morning and headed south for Taupo. On the way we stopped at Huka Falls Jet for the best adventure of the whole trip - a jet boat ride. For about half an hour we flew along the river (almost literally!), dodging trees and doing 360 degree spins, and ending up right at the foot of the Huka Falls. Totally exhilarating!
Next we checked out Craters of the Moon, which is pretty much on the opposite side of the highway from the jet boat. There were LOTS of steps up to the top of the hill, but it was worth it for a good photo. From there it was on to Taupo and a cruise on the lake.
Lake Taupo is about 40km long and 180m deep, and was formed by a huge ancient volcanic explosion, which was heard and felt on the other side of the world, according to historical records. We took an hour and a half cruise to see the Maori cliff-face carvings, but also while on board we had tea and scones, fed some ducks who flew alongside and took bread from your hand, and one of the guests caught a huge rainbow trout (which WAS released).
That night we stayed at the Wairakei Resort Taupo, which was quite nice, and had an unexpected welcoming party - dozens of rabbits hopping around the lawns.
